Santa Ynez Sunrise
On a Sunday morning before my desk job, I drove up to catch the sunrise atop Knapp's Castle in Santa Barbara CA. I arrived before sunrise, the temperature had dropped to near freezing from when I had left home and looking into the valley was a complete whiteout. No detail to be had, so I waited. Thirty minutes went by and the sun was making a show but still large swaths of cloud coverage made any photography challenging at best. Then it all happened in a matter of moments, a breeze swept away most of the clouds, leaving only hints of fog in its wake, the sunlight bathed the ridges and my underprepared freezing self went into action taking advantage as the opportunities that presented themselves.
Santa Ynez mountains is part of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indian's homeland. It is essential that when visiting these places, that we recognize the displacement of the native people and listen to them for solutions.
